Textile: Intro to Dyeing with Native Plants

Join us at Hanford Mills Museum on August 28 to practice dyeing with plants native to the Catskill region. The workshop is led by Tabitha Gilmore-Barnes of the Tabitha Gilmore-Barnes Studio.dyed wool

During this workshop participants will identify local plants that produce yellow dyes, such as Black Eyed Susan and Queen Anne’s Lace, use Indigo, and use alum as a mordant before the dyeing process. Participants will use pre-made native plant dye baths to dye up six 1 oz batches of local wool, with 3-4 in the original colors, and with 2 to be overdyed with Indigo.

All participants are encouraged to bring lined paper or notebook, #2 pencils and eraser/pen, colored pencils. Participants will take home six 1 oz batches of dyed wool.

The workshop fee, which includes all materials, is $60 for museum members and $80 for non-members. Pre-registration is required.   The workshop is intended for those over the age of 18, but youth age 10 -17 may take the workshop with parent participation.

Tabitha attended SUNY Fashion Institute of Technology’s Textile and Surface Design program, and took two workshops at The Tapestry Center (now defunct) in New York City. She graduated SUNY New Paltz with a B.S. in Art Education that included textile credits. She is a member of the Catskill Mountain Artisans Guild, in the Margaretville (Delaware County) Gallery and a member of the Buy Pure Catskills Guide since 2007 and has participated in the AMR Open Studios Tours since 2012, as well as the Roxbury Arts Group’s juried arts exhibits.
