ROUND BASKETS: Intro to Willow Basketry w. Jesica Clark

August 17 & 18, Saturday & Sunday
9am – 5pm
$300 (includes all materials)

During this weekend course students will create beautiful round baskets from willow. Learn to construct a traditional basket with a circular base, rounded or sharp angled upsett, a choice of side weaves and a woven border. Time permitting, students can weave a complementary handle. Students who have participated in a previous willow weaving class can either revisit that same basket style or explore a different type of round basket. Participants will finish the class with a sturdy and useful vessel. Willow can be challenging to work with, someone with hand issues or weak hands may find this class difficult. Includes 1 hr lunch break – participants bring their own lunch.

Jes Clark (they/them) is the farmer and weaver at Willow Vale Farm in Stanfordville, NY. Jes weaves traditional and contemporary functional pieces and the basket forms created are a result of their conversation with each stick of willow. All of their willow is grown without pesticides using regenerative practices and with loving care.

Jes has been teaching weaving since 2018 and has taught hundreds of students ranging from absolute beginners to experienced weavers looking to refine their craft. They have taught at the Stowe Basketry Festival, for the Northeast Basketmakers Guild, at the New York Botanical Garden just to name a few, and also privately in one-on-one tutorials. You can discover more of their work at instagram.com/willowvalefarm and https://www.willowvale.farm/

Patsy Cline: A Tribute to An Icon
Rebecca Miner was first introduced to Patsy Cline in 1985 sitting in the passenger seat of her friend’s 1975 Ford pickup truck. Her buddy, Eric, had just bought a cassette of Patsy’s Greatest Hits Album and was excited to play it for her. Rebecca was instantly taken by, not only her amazing voice, but by the heart and passion with which she sang. She’s been in love with Patsy ever since.

Patsy Cline was an original. She was one of a kind. At an early age she knew exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Patsy was not the type to say, “I hope one day to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.” She was the type to say, “I will.” And, boy, did she ever! She was bold and audacious at a time when women held little power in business or entertainment. She was often labeled “difficult” and “too outspoken”, but that didn’t stop her. She knew exactly who she was. Later in her career, she would jokingly refer to herself as “the Cline.”

March 5th of 1963, Patsy was tragically killed in a plane crash. She was only 30 years old. In spite of a career cut short, she left us an amazing legacy of music which continues to inspire and move us even today.

In our Tribute to Patsy Cline’s music we perform her biggest hits from 1955 to 1963. We begin with her first record and end with one of her final recordings. Along the way, Rebecca (dressed at Patsy) shares stories and letters that provide a backdrop to her amazing music.

Rebecca is joined by some amazing musicians from Central New York: John Handzel on bass, Tim Baldwin on guitar and vocals, Joshua Dahlin on drums, Andy Box on keyboards and vocals, and George Newton on Pedal Steel.

Rebecca fell in love with Patsy as a young woman of 20. We hope that by knowing a bit more about what was going on in Patsy’s life as a performer, you will feel an even greater attachment to Cline’s legacy – her music. And if you haven’t already, we hope that you fall in love with Patsy, too. Join us as we celebrate Patsy, the brassy, brilliant, and iconic first lady of Country Music.
